Curd rice or Thayir sadam is one of the most popular one pot meal from South India. Preparation is quite simple where boiled rice is mixed with salted yogurt tampered with mustard seeds, dry red chillies, curry leaves and urad dal and garnished with fresh cut fruits and fresh coriander leaves.Its often eaten with mango or lime pickle.
Thayir Sadam / Curd Rice
Ingredients
- 2 cups cooked rice, use jasmine rice or basmati rice
- 1 1/2 cup curd
- salt as required
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 dry red chilies
- curry leaves
- 1 tsp chopped ginger
- chopped coriander leaves
- chopped pearl onions
- 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds
- 2 small green chillies, chopped in rounds
- asafoetida , a pinch
Directions
Slightly beat the yogurt and add salt, set aside. Mash rice and mix with yogurt. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan. Splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chillies and curry leaves .Add shallots and hing powder, saute for few minutes. Add this tadka or seasoning to rice and mix well. Garnish with coriander leaves, chopped fresh fruits , cut green chillies and pomegranate seeds.
Cool curd rice..addition of pearl onions is new to me.I have never tasted curd rice with onions anywhere.
