Apple Pie From Scratch - Thanksgiving Dessert

Apple Pie

Ingredients for pie shell
  • 2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar

Ingredients for filling
  • 5 apples(preferably granny smith)
  • 2/4 cup of sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp butter

Directions

Build the Pie shell
Cut cold butter into small pieces. Mix the butter and all purpose sugar together. Add 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp salt. Mix together to form a smooth dough. Add cold water if required. Divide the dough into two parts and keep it refrigerated.

Filling
Pre-heat oven to 400 degree F. Remove the skin and core from apple and cut into thin slices. Add lemon juice, 1/2 cup of sugar, cinnamon and nut meg and mix together and keep aside.

Mix the 1/4 cup of sugar, remaining all purpose flour and sugar. mix with a spoon or hand and then give few jerks in a blender.

Build the pie
Spread some butter on a 9 inch pie shell. Flatten 1/2 of the shell to round shape and place it in the pie pan to fit it completely. Using a fork create few pinches on the shell to prevent steam build up. Add a layer of Apple pieces and then add the sugar, flour and butter mix. Add remaining apple pieces and the mix. Flatten the remaining pie shell and cut into thin stripes. Place the strips on top the apple filling to create a nice design. Bake at 400 degree F for 45 minutes until the top of the crust turns light brown. Cool down and cut into wedges using a serrated knife.
