Kurukku kalan
Kurukku kalan or katti kalan is a traditional dish in Kerala and is a important dish during
Onam and
Vishu or any Sadya(Feast).Katti kaln is served as a side dish with rice.
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw plantains
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp fresh pepper powder
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1/2 tsp roasted fenugreek powder
- 2 tsp ghee(clarified butter)
- salt, as needed
To Grind
- 1 cup fresh coconut
- 1 to 2 green chillies
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
For seasoning
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- curry leaves, few
- 1-2 dry red chillies
Direction
Cook raw plantains with turmeric powder, pepper powder and salt adding little bit water.When the water is
reduced and plantains are half cooked add 2 tsp ghee. Add thin yogurt and boil well till the gravy becomes thick. At this stage add ground coconut paste and keep it in low flame for 5 more minutes. Tamper with mustard seeds, red hillies and curry leaves. Sprinkle roasted fenugreek powder on top of kalan and serve as a side dish with rice.
